In ‘Murderers’ at Vintage Theatre, the comedy explores 3 plots from an old folks’ home
Murderers by Jeffrey Hatcher, on stage at Vintage Theatre, provides an engaging and entertaining evening of theatre showcasing the talent of three local actors well-known to audiences around town: Mary Campbell, Mari Geasair and Troy Lakey.
Directed by Vintage Artistic Director Bernie Cardell, the play consists of three monologues, each approximately 30 minutes, in which the actors describe how they will commit the perfect murder. The action takes place in Florida — specifically at The Riddle Key Luxury Retirement Living Center and Golf Course.
In the opening scene, “The Man Who Married His Mother-In-Law,” Gerald (Troy Lakey) wants to shelter a large inheritance from the IRS. A surprise twist threatens to destroy Gerald’s plan unless he can stop it. He must commit the perfect murder!
Lakey, impeccably attired in a tuxedo, exudes effortless charm and sophistication as Gerald. He embodies the debonair son-in-law and husband with a polished million-dollar presence that is smooth as glass.
More murders
“Margaret Faydle Comes to Town” introduces us to Lucy (Campbell), whose husband has an eye for pretty women. Although he is on his best behavior, that changes when a woman named Margaret Faydle comes to town. There is a history between Bob and Margaret, and Lucy is determined to quash it once and for all. She must commit the perfect murder!
As always, Campbell delivers a lovely performance, capturing all the nuances to create a truly delightful, albeit murderous, character.
In the final scene, “Match Wits with Minka Lupino,” we meet overly sunny receptionist, Minka (Geasair). Her mission is to rid the retirement community of all the unsavory characters who continually show up. However, she meets her match when a famous mystery novelist takes up residence. It is a fight to the finish between the two — now she is the one who must commit the perfect murder!
Geasair brings Minka to life with all the right moves, effortlessly capturing her ever-smiling receptionist’s charm and unsettling passion for murder as she cunningly plots her next conquest.
Under Cardell’s deft direction, Murderers delivers a fun, light comedy, presenting three distinct and standalone stories. With his talented cast, Cardell masterfully fosters direct interaction between actors and the audience, creating an intimate and engaging atmosphere. This approach succeeds exceptionally well, encouraging a warm sense of inclusion and connection throughout the performance.
