The Butte Theater is an 1890s opera house in downtown Cripple Creek preserving the tradition of classic American melodrama. Located at 139 E. Bennett Ave., the historic venue was extensively refurbished in 1999 by the City of Cripple Creek with Victorian-era wallpaper, period chandeliers and modern sound and projection equipment.
The 184-seat theater features a 1,350-square-foot stage with cabaret-style tables and traditional auditorium seating. A full bar serves refreshments before shows and during intermission, and the venue is ADA accessible via elevator.
Programming is split between a Community Season (January-May) featuring local actors and a Professional Season (June-December) with professional talent from across the country. Mountain Repertory Theatre serves as the resident professional company, producing Broadway musicals, contemporary plays, holiday shows and classic melodramas. The Butte Theater is one of the last remaining venues in the country maintaining the classic melodrama tradition that has been part of Cripple Creek's cultural life since the 1940s.
