Firehouse Theater Company

Firehouse Theater Company is a non-profit theatrical organization in Denver that provides a collaborative environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn, explore, and practice the art of theater. The company performs in the intimate 86-seat John Hand Theater, located at 7653 E. 1st Place in the Colorado Free University building in Lowry.

The theater space has a unique history – it’s housed in a building that was originally the fire station for Lowry Air Force Base, with the theater residing in the old truck bay where fire trucks once stood ready. Founded in 2004 by John Hand, who also started Colorado Free University, the company focuses on presenting shows that explore human relationships and leave audiences thinking and discussing as they leave.

Firehouse Theater Company regularly offers a mix of classic theater and newer productions, many of which center on the stories of marginalized communities. The company received the Westword award for Best Programming by a theater company in 2023. Their mission is to build a community of positivity, kindness, inclusivity, and joy through the theater arts.
