‘Bohemian Cast’ doesn’t disappoint
Although I rarely see a production more than once during its run, I made an exception by seeing tick, tick … Boom! a second time at Vintage Theatre. This production sports two separate casts and I was curious to see how the “Bohemian Cast” fared, having previously reviewed the “Moondance Cast” for OnStage Colorado, on March 22.
I am equally enthusiastic about this cast as I was the first. The central figure of Jon is played by the charming Nicholas Marshall. Along with being appropriately boyish, he exudes the right amount of angst as he anticipates his fast-approaching 30th birthday. On stage for the entire performance, Marshall never misses a beat. As Jon’s girlfriend Susan, Isabella Duran delivers a winning performance. Playing multiple roles, she is extremely funny as Jon’s somewhat absent agent, Rosa Stephens, and delivers a knock-out performance as Karessa. Rounding out the cast is Hayes Burton as Jon’s best friend, Michael, turning in a solid and highly emotional performance. He too gets to show off his comedic talents as Jon’s proud father.
With this cast, there are several musical numbers worth mentioning. “Sunday” is yet again a delightful peek behind the scenes at Sunday brunch in New York City while “Therapy” gives us a front-row seat to couples counseling. Burton turns in a searingly soulful rendition of “Real Life” and Duran is electrifying with “Come to Your Senses” as Karessa. Happily, Marshall is featured in many of the musical numbers and is especially effective and moving during “See Her Smile.”
I am happy that I decided to return to tick, tick … Boom! for a second time to experience this cast. They don’t disappoint.
Bohemian Cast is scheduled to perform Thursday nights and Saturday afternoons.
