Breckenridge Backstage Theatre is the oldest year-round theater company on Colorado's Western Slope and Summit County's longest-serving nonprofit organization. Founded in 1974, the company operates from the Breckenridge Theater, a 137-seat venue in historic downtown Breckenridge that underwent a $2.55 million renovation completed in 2016.
The theater presents a mix of community-based and professional theatrical productions including musicals, comedies, dramas and holiday shows. The company also utilizes the 750-seat Riverwalk Theatre for larger productions as needed. In 2022, Breckenridge Backstage Theatre appointed Jacqueline Stone as Producing Artistic Director to lead organizational growth and expansion toward Equity status.
The company has received numerous Colorado Theatre Guild and True West Awards, including the prestigious Colorado Theatre Guild Outstanding Regional Theatre Award in 2010. Breckenridge Backstage Theatre offers educational programs including youth theater classes, winter and spring break camps, and children's theater workshops for Summit County residents.
The renovated theater features a contemporary design with a spacious lobby that doubles as gallery space, and a bar and lounge available 30 minutes prior to showtime. Technological upgrades accommodate various cultural offerings including speaker series, films and intimate concerts. The venue is located in the Breckenridge Arts District, part of the Colorado Creative Industries Creative District Program.
Breckenridge Backstage Theatre continues its mission to enrich, educate and entertain Summit County children, residents and visitors through opportunities to participate in and experience live theater in Colorado's mountain communities.
