Colorado Theatre Guild hosted its annual awards show Monday in Lone Tree
The Colorado Theatre Guild hosted its annual Henry Awards Monday evening at Lone Tree Arts Center. Compared to some previous years, where a few theatres (usually the larger ones) walk away with the lion’s share of the awards, at this year’s Awards, the love was spread more evenly.
While heavyweights like the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities and the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company picked up the most nominations, with 27 and 26, respectively, the DCPA only came home with seven awards while Arvada picked up six.
The only other theatres that picked up more than one award were Miners Alley, Performance Now and the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre, all with three, and Thunder River Theatre Company, Two Cent Lion and the Platte Valley Players receiving two apiece.
These were the first Henry wins for newcomer Two Cent Lion.
Tiny Buntport Theater netted a surprise 11 nominations for its original productions, coming home with one trophy. Fort Collins’ OpenStage Theatre & Company had eight nominations and one win.
A few other companies that often win multiple Henrys that came home with only one this year included Town Hall Arts Center, Cherry Creek Theatre, Creede Repertory Theatre, the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company and the Aurora Fox. The Colorado Shakespeare Festival and Phamaly were two of the companies delivering high-quality productions that didn’t get a single award this year.
This year’s awards were also notable for the number of ties, including a three-way for Best New Play or Musical.
