Jane, an art curator, wants to “change the face of [the] museum to truly reflect America.” She excludes her artist friend, Gus, a white gay man, arguing that “white dudes” have had their turn. Outraged and desperate to have his work included, Gus hires Vanessa, a Black actress, to perform as Balkonaé Townsend, a brash and political artist that will fit the museum’s desire for “new voices.” Everything is great, until Balkonaé takes over and Gus has to deal with the mess he’s made. The play spins out of control as it explores issues of race, gender, sexuality, and art.
