The Breckenridge Backstage Theatre’s production of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is not to be missed. Directed by Jamal Howard, this witty and whimsical musical takes theatergoers on a thrilling journey filled with humor, charm and a dash of dark comedy. Led by the talented Keith Warren in the role of the D’Ysquith Family, the brilliant cast delivers uproarious moments with impeccable comedic timing that had the entire audience in stitches.

The story revolves around Monty Navarro (Matthew Combs), a young and impoverished man who discovers that he is ninth in line to inherit a noble title and a vast fortune. Determined to secure his place in society, Monty hatches a devious plan to eliminate the eight relatives standing in his way. The D’Ysquiths are a peculiar and eccentric aristocratic family, played entirely by Keith J. Warren, who portrays nine distinct characters with their own personalities, quirks and fates. Warren’s darkly comedic approach adds a delightful layer of absurdity and intrigue to the plot, showcasing his incredible versatility and impeccable timing, and providing a constant source of humor and suspense.

While Warren’s performance unquestionably steals the show, Combs also brings a captivating presence to the stage, effortlessly embodying the charismatic and conniving Navarro. His remarkable range of emotions, from mischievousness to vulnerability, keeps the audience engaged throughout the performance.

Monica Joyce Slabach, as Phoebe D’Ysquith, delivers a stunning vocal performance that commands the stage with her powerful singing. Slabach not only showcases her exceptional vocal range but also infuses her performance with a delightful touch of comedic flair.

Under the skilled guidance of Howard, the production comes to life with impeccable precision and attention to detail. The staging is inventive, making excellent use of the intimate Backstage Theatre space. The seamless transitions between scenes and the clever blocking contribute to the fast-paced and energetic atmosphere that drives the narrative forward. The energy in the air is electric, with an enthusiastic audience only heightening the overall ambiance.

The intricate period costumes add authenticity and flair to each character, capturing the essence of the time period. However, I must note that the makeup choices, particularly with the ensemble cast, are perplexing and questionable.

My friend, who hadn’t been to the Backstage Theatre for some time, remarked on how Breckenridge continues to elevate and improve its art scene, and this production further demonstrates the town’s dedication to the arts.

Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is a delightful romp that will leave you thoroughly entertained. Whether you’re a theatre enthusiast or simply looking for a night of laughter, this play is the perfect choice for an enjoyable evening of theatrical magic.
