Show features heart pounding performances from an international cast
Upon arrival for a performance of Cirque: Spirit of Christmas at the Gaylord Rockies Resort in Aurora, the audience has already been totally immersed in a Christmastime sensory overload. The Gaylord Rockies has fashioned itself as a Christmas village (more like small city) along with quaint streetscapes, dozens of decorated trees, Charlie Brown ice sculptures and even an ice slide and skating rink outside for winter enthusiasts of all ages.
Nestled in the middle of all this holiday excitement is the Bubly Theater set up as an arena for Cirque: Spirit of Christmas. Lasting 75 jaw-dropping minutes, the performance is an unrelenting stream of captivating acts of skill and acrobatic feats. Although the focus of the performance is the rapid-fire individual acts, there is an underlying and storyline involving Noel, the little girl in search of lost Christmas spirit. Accompanied by live musical performances featuring Broadway style music, as well as pre-recorded Christmas songs, the soundtrack is holiday perfect.
Performance highlights include dazzling, high-flying trapeze duos, extreme juggling with multiple bouncing balls, a roller-staking couple pushing the limits of acrobatic positions and several balancing acts high above the stage floor. Every act catapulted the audience to the next act with audible gasps of amazement and wild applause.
Costumes are colorful and include ample amounts of glitter and sequins. Although performed mostly on a bare stage, the lighting intensifies the highlighted action on stage. The sound and recorded music are never over-powering.
All told, Cirque: Spirit of Christmas is a high-energy 75-minute performance that leaves the audience wanting more before heading into the Christmas fairyland outside the theatre.
