Produced by the Colorado Theatre Guild, the awards recognize theatre excellence around the State of Colorado every year
What are the Henry Awards?
Named after legendary Denver theatre producer Henry Lowenstein, the Henry Awards were established in 2006 by the statewide Colorado Theatre Guild. Over the “Henry Season,” which runs between May 15 and May 16 the following year, over 100 judges fan out around the state to see and assess productions.
Who are the judges?
Henry judges are academics, theatre professionals and other theatre lovers spread around the state in different regions. Judges are expected to follow a set of rules, such as always staying for the entire show, not judging shows where they may have a conflict of interest and not discussing their ballots with anyone. Judges receive two complimentary tickets for each show they attend. Judges must also see at least a third of the shows they assess outside of their home region.
What are the regions judges cover?
- Denver Metro
- Southern Colorado
- Northern Colorado
- Front Range
- Mountains
What are the eligibility requirements?
To be part of the awards, theatres need to request that they be included. There are a number of eligibility requirements, starting with being a member of the CTG. Shows must have at least eight performances, and out-of-state productions such as touring Broadway shows are not eligible. Student theatre, readings, puppet theatre, opera, mime, improv and a few other types of shows are not eligible. (See the full eligibility requirements.)
How do the judges score shows?
Judges follow a rubric that uses a point system for criteria such as acting, singing, directing, music direction, set design, etc. (See the full Henry Judging Rubric.) Points are awarded in each category thusly:
Fair: 11-20 points
Good: 21-20
Very Good: 31-40
Excellent: 41-50
When are the Henry Awards presented?
The CTG has an annual awards event typically held in late July held at different theatres. Anyone is welcome to purchase a ticket and attend.
What are the Henry tiers?
Certain awards are presented in two tiers: Tier One is for theatre companies with annual budgets over $500,000 and Tier 2 is for all those with budgets under that.
