Local Theater Company (LTC) announced its return to live performance today. From June 24 to July 15, LTC, in conjunction with the City of Boulder, will present an original concert, Discount Ghost Stories: Songs from the Rockies, at the Central Park Bandshell, an historic landmark in the city’s center.
Discount Ghost Stories: Songs from the Rockies features original music by New York-based composer/lyricist Alexander Sage Oyen and will be directed by Local Theater Company’s Founding Artistic Director Pesha Rudnick with a book by Rudnick and Rob Wright. Additional text has been provided by Ute documentary filmmaker Larry Cesspooch (White Belly). The con- cert features a blend of funk, bluegrass and pop music interwoven with rarely-heard stories of Colorado’s past. The characters include a number of the Centennial State!s remarkable (and very real) historical figures: Clara Brown, a formerly-enslaved woman turned community organizer; Tabernash, a member of the Ute Nation; Look Young, a Chinese immigrant and owner of a Den- ver-area laundry; and Clifford Griffin, a violin-playing mine owner.
Rudnick said, “We are relieved and thrilled to return to live performance. It feels fitting that our first show in over a year will take place safely under the stars at the iconic Art Deco landmark. The Bandshell was originally designed to serve as a public gathering space for art and audiences following the Great Depression. Together, we will celebrate community, enjoy live music and amplify the stories of rarely known Coloradans that contributed to our great state’s history.”
To support the production—Local’s first live presentation in nearly 19 months—the company has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser. Executive Producer Alison Palmer said, “It’s an honor to pro- vide live performance to our beloved community. We are seeking business and community sup- port for this live and accessible outdoor production. Discount Ghost Stories: Songs from the Rockies will put over 50 theater artists back to work after months of uncertainty. We’re also pleased to announce that four shows will be offered completely free to the general public so that anyone may attend.”
