This classical theatrical gem concerns fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, who has remarried but finds himself quite literally haunted by the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira. Charles invites the eccentric and flighty medium, Madame Arcati, to conduct a séance which backfires when Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles’s marriage to Ruth. As everyone’s personalities clash, Ruth is accidentally killed. She “passes over” and joins Elvira, allowing the two “blithe spirits” to haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
