Theatre Silco’s production of Head Over Heels, directed and choreographed by Josh Walden, with music direction by Timothy Fletcher, presents an entertaining evening of singing, dancing and an abundance of laugher.
A fresh musical by Jeff Whitty with music by the iconic ’80s girl band The Go-Go’s, Head over Heels transports us to the kingdom of Arcadia where the royal family sets off on a journey of love, identity and self-discovery. When a prophecy reveals that their kingdom will be doomed unless someone embarks on a quest to save it, the characters set out on a journey filled with romance, mistaken identities and hilarious misunderstandings. The plot takes unexpected turns as characters grapple with their desires and societal expectations, leading to a beautiful celebration of love and acceptance.
While the cast brings commendable energy to the stage, there are moments where I yearned for an added boost of volume, an extra spark of something special — particularly at the beginning. Nonetheless, a few standout performances leave a lasting impression. Kenya Hamilton, portraying Gyencia, showcases a spectacular voice that soars through the theatre. Cooper Stanton, a member of the ensemble, dazzles with incredible dance moves, injecting a helpful dose of energy and skill into the performance. Adam Magnacca, in the role of Musidorus, delivers a hilarious performance, providing several side-splitting moments throughout the production. However, it is Louis Hansen’s portrayal of Pythio that truly mesmerizes, leaving a yearning for even more of their magnetic presence on stage.
As a jukebox musicals like Mama Mia! or Jersey Boys, the music becomes an integral part of the storytelling, adding an extra layer of familiarity and enjoyment to the theatrical experience. By weaving songs from the ’80s into the narrative, Head Over Heels tapped into my sense of nostalgia, whisking me back to high school and creating an instant connection.
For me, the true strength of Head Over Heels lies in its thought-provoking plot, fearlessly delving into the exploration of sexual orientation and gender identity — a theme deeply relevant to our times. The creative team’s vision was evident in the set design, costumes, and lighting, which effectively enhances the storytelling.
With its infectious music, playful spirit, and stimulating themes of self-discovery, empowerment, and the triumph of love, Head Over Heels delivered a musical confection perfect for a summer evening along the Blue River in Silverthorne.
