‘Moriarty’ launches the summer season in Silverthorne in a true laugh fest
Silverthorne’s Theatre Silco has outdone itself with its production of Ken Ludwig’s Moriarty: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, a rip-roaring comedic adventure that had the sold-out theatre on the night I attended roaring with laughter from start to finish. Under the expert guidance of Producing Artistic Director Chris Alleman and the skillful direction of J. Blanchard, this production is nothing short of a theatrical triumph.
With a relentless comedic momentum that never lets up, the production is the Silco’s first “sequel,” starting where last year’s Baskerville ends. But the show is a complete stand-alone production.
Kieran Danaan excels as Sherlock Holmes, using impeccable physical comedy to bring the iconic detective to life. Christopher Joel Onken, as the ever-loyal Doctor Watson, matches Danaan’s energy and timing perfectly, creating a dynamic duo that propels the show’s humor and excitement.
The ensemble cast — Patrick Halley, Laura Cable and Ben Griffin — is equally phenomenal. Each actor transitions between multiple roles with remarkable precision and clarity, even slipping in and out of character while wearing the same costume, adding an extra layer of hilarity. Their performances are just as brilliant as the leading actors, showcasing impressive versatility and impeccable comedic timing.

High energy – and then some
Physical comedy is a highlight of this production, from exaggerated pratfalls to perfectly timed slapstick routines. The show demands a high level of coordination and energy maintained throughout a performance, and this cast makes it look effortless.
One of the most delightful scenes takes place on a train, where Holmes and Watson engage in a lively conversation while bouncing up and down as though truly on a moving train. The synchronization and commitment of Danaan and Onken to the physicality of this scene were impeccable, their perfectly timed bounces immersing the audience in the illusion and sparking uproarious laughter.
The chemistry among the cast members is electric, amplifying the humor and keeping the audience engaged throughout. The scenic design by Jon Young and staging further enhance the comedic experience, with clever use of space and props contributing to the visual gags.
Theater Silco has a history of high-quality productions, but Moriarty is may just be one of the best shows ever staged here. The combination of exceptional acting, brilliant direction and nonstop laughter makes this a must-see performance.
