‘Nice Work If You Can Get It’ sweeps Henry Awards with 12 wins

DCPA Cabaret’s ‘Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors’ grabs four awards, while Denver Center’s ‘English’ was named outstanding production of a play.

The Colorado Theatre Guild handed out its 20th annual Henry Awards Monday night at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, and Lone Tree Arts Center’s production of Nice Work If You Can Get It was the runaway winner of the evening, converting 12 of its 17 nominations into wins — including Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Ensemble Performance and sweeps of the top acting and design categories.

Directed by Kate Gleason and choreographed by Christopher Page-Sanders, both of whom won in their respective categories, the Gershwin-fueled musical also claimed Outstanding Musical Direction (Alec Steinhorn), Costume Design Tier 1 (Madison Booth) and Sound Design Tier 1 (Max Silverman). In the performance categories, married co-stars Adriane Leigh Robinson and Marco Alberto Robinson both won Outstanding Performance in a Musical Tier 1, and three of the show’s cast members — Elise Daniells, Jennifer DeDominici and Shabazz Green — shared a three-way tie for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical Tier 1.

Adriane Leigh Robinson had the night’s best individual showing, winning twice: once for Nice Work If You Can Get It and again for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play Tier 1 for her turn in DCPA Cabaret’s Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, alongside co-star Leslie O’Carroll.

Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors was the night’s second-biggest winner with four awards, adding Outstanding Direction of a Play (Gordon Greenberg) and Outstanding Lighting Design Tier 1 (Charles R. MacLeod) to its two acting wins.

Often the awards leader at the Henry’s, Denver Center Theatre Company only grabbed three wins across three productions: English took Outstanding Production of a Play, The Happiest Man on Earth‘s Kenneth Tigar won Outstanding Performance in a Play Tier 1, and Godspeed, by Terence Anthony, was named Outstanding New Play or Musical — World Premiere.
