The 1960s-set musical by Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley runs June 5-28 as part of the Fox’s Season 41.
The Aurora Fox Arts Center and Phamaly Theatre Company will join forces this summer for the contemporary musical Violet, running June 5 through June 28 on the Fox’s mainstage as part of the company’s Season 41 lineup.
Phamaly Artistic Director Ben Raanan directs the co-production, which pairs two companies focused on accessibility and inclusive storytelling. Raanan said the partnership lets the team tell the story “with authenticity and depth,” grounded in a shared commitment to inclusive work.
Lisa Rigsby Peterson, interim director of the Aurora Fox, said the theatre is proud to partner with an organization redefining what inclusive theatre can look like.
Set in the 1960s, Violet follows a young woman traveling by bus across the American South to reach a televangelist she believes can heal a facial scar. Along the way, she meets unexpected friends and faces challenges that reshape how she sees herself and the world. The score draws on American folk, gospel and roots traditions.
The musical features music by Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori, with book and lyrics by Brian Crawley, and is based on Doris Betts’ short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim.” Violet premiered Off-Broadway in 1997, where it earned the Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Lucille Lortel Award for best musical, and made its Tony-nominated Broadway debut in 2014.
Accessibility services include captions at all performances, with ASL interpretation and audio description on Access Day, Sunday, June 14, or by request with two weeks’ notice at info@phamaly.org. Additional accommodations include assisted listening devices, wheelchair-accessible seating, low-sensory quiet spaces and accessibility materials such as Braille programs and sensory guides.
